Face Down

From CMC Wiki

Status Icon: Image:Specialicon face.gif

Entities with Face Down enter play with the Face Down status effect. This is denoted by an icon of the back of a card in the upper-left corner of the cardart, to the controlling player only. A card with this status can only be seen by the player who controls it - The opposing player will see the card only the "back" of the card, thus giving them no infomation of what the card or its abilities are. When the card is targeted it will be referred to as "Face Down Card" so that the identity of the card is kept secret. It is sometimes possible to calculate or guess what Face Down cards are, such as if your mana totals only allow for a small number of possibilities, or if they exhibit abilities such as Entrenching.

It also hides the player's mana totals, instead giving theoretical maximums - these assume that the Face Down cards cost zero mana to cast, but will show changes due to generation, maintenance, and so on. As well as hiding what card was just played, this can prevent the opponent from guessing what you are able to afford to play in future as well.

If any of the following conditions are met, a Face Down card will be revealed:

  1. If a Face Down monster is assigned to attack or defend, it is revealed immediately (there is no opportunity to cancel this).
  2. If a Face Down monster is attacked directly, it is revealed as combat resolves.
  3. If a Face Down entity uses either its activated ability, or that of an attached modifier, it is revealed immediately (there is no opportunity to cancel this).
  4. If a Face Down entity leaves play, it is revealed.
  5. The ability of a card directly removes Face Down status (these are listed below).
