Effect
From CMC Wiki
Effects are cards that are played in the middle rows on the field. They are entities that usually stay in play until they are destroyed/obliterated/removed by the opponent, or Sacrificed.
Effect Types
Like monsters, there are various types of effects. However, these types tend to correspond to functionality more than characterization.
Generators are effects that produce mana. Most of these generate mana that is gained at every draw phase. As you normally only recieve 1 mana of each color, generators are an important part of almost every deck.
Basic Generators are generators whose only ability is to generate 1 mana of their color.
Sources are effects whose sole function is to be sacrificed for mana. They are more commonly known as sac mana or saccable mana.
Traps are effects that specially trigger responses from enemy monsters. A common example is Kelar Tower which deals 7 damage to all attacking enemy monsters.
Territories are effects that generally support a certain group of monsters (such as Fairy Kingdom) and/or are able to produce monsters (such as Slime Valley).
Weapons are effects who's primary function is offensive. Most do so by damaging monsters, but some are able to destroy monsters and/or effects (Cursed Warhammer), or even deal direct damage (Sword Bomb).
Devices are effects who's function is mostly defensive. They have a great range of abilities, from disabling monsters (Spray Glue) to manipulating stats (Magic Eight Squall). Exception: Bakuga Cannon (it's main function is very much offensive, but it also has the weapon type)
Equipment are effects who's function is to support monsters. They are generally defensive.
Cakes are special effects that are given out at every anniversity of CMC.
Trophies are special effects that are given to the winners of certain tournaments. Currently, they are all tricolored and have very unique effects.
There are a few other types such as Artifacts and Buildings, but they tend to be more descriptive of looks than functionality.
Those effects who do not have a type listed above are simply called Effects.
Effect Creation
Most effects are created by playing them directly from your hand. However, there are a few that are created by spells (Cast Magishield) or abilities (Kelar Engineer). Effects created those ways are given token status.
Effect Destruction
Effects are generally harder to remove than monsters. Only certain abilities and spells can remove effects. A card with an ability to destroy or obliterate effects is called Effect Destruction. Effect destruction spells are generally cheaper than Monster Destruction, but effect destruction abilities are slightly more expensive and much rarer.
While some effects will not bother the opponent, others will put them in a very difficult situation. That is why many decks usually have one or two cards dedicated to handling destroying them.
